TOKYO DAY SIX: Ingrid's Birthday in Sinjuku(英格麗新宿生日派對)

Around 3:25 p.m., Ian and I arrive at Akihabara station. We are waiting for Pinhsi, whom I have met during UK postgraduate life. It has been a long time that we haven’t seen each other. Pinhsi is a well-behavior girl (for me, she’s always a girl, like my little sister). She is also a kind, thoughtful and responsible person with enthusiastic attitudes. True beauty lies not in her appearance, but deep within her heart. When someone asks me to introduce a female as a girlfriend, I always think of her.

After a small greetings and talk, three of us separate in two different directions. Pinhsi and I go for coffee; Ian start his adventure in Akihabara(秋葉原). Chatting about the old days and exchanging recent individual lives have always been female privileges. We both miss Durham, but life is no longer there. It let me think of once London afternoon talk, Kimmy and I stayed at kebab restaurant near Leicester Square. Kimmy told me lots of PR and IT industry experiences. Now, I still appreciate for her suggestion.

6:50 pm at the Lion square

Pinhsi, Ian and I move to Shinjuku to meet another Durham friend, Shinya, a real Japanese gentleman. According to Shinya’s original email, the time we meet up is 7 p.m. at the Lion square, in front of Shinjuku Alta, outside of east exit of Shinjuku station. On the other day, he rescheduled to 6:50 p.m. to make sure our reservation time “7 p.m. is safe”. “We still need to walk to the restaurant, so we should meet up earlier.” Shinya wrote on mail. Japanese is Japanese. I respect they are doing things on schedule and always doing things in order.

Around 6:50 p.m., Shinya is coming. My little brother grows up! As international sales of PENTAX, Shinya becomes more mature. I don’t see any unctuous or slippery characters which some sales have on him. I hope even 5 years or 10 years after, he still could keep good characters.

Sora宙 ~Sushi, Wine, Sake & Japanese Cuisine~

Sora (Note 1) is a special restaurant of NY dining style, decorating with aquariums and plastic beaded curtains. I was under delusion of a space-time travel. It is also named for its creative cuisine(創作料理). My little brother had ordered the meal for us when he made a reservation. No matter it is side dishes, 大根, 餃子, Rice, Spring Roll, Sushi, Organ of Beef, or tiramisu, the taste of every dish is fresh with concise style. After a while, the light suddenly turns off. I guess it’s the time to change to a new atmosphere “night mode”, with candle or led light, something interesting. However, I was wrong. My birthday cake is coming in my eyes; I am so overwhelming. It’s a big surprise.

Ingrid’s Birthday Party

おめでとうございます”, “お誕生日”. “Happy Birthday, Ingrid” I am so happy to accept friends’ and restaurant workers’ congratulations. The birthday song continue to play, I could not help laughing. They write Ingrid on my cake, the most popular cake in this restaurant. 超人氣商品! Shinya is going to pay for dinner and he insists on it. “Last time when I accidentally met Ingrid at NationalPalaceMuseum, she has treated me afternoon tea.” he said. “This is my turn.” He added. “But, the amount between what we have paid is totally different.” I doubted. “It’s the same because we are both for the duties of the host. The only thing we care is to make friends happy.” Shinya answered. Simultaneously, he gives me a black crystal glass from Hoya as a present. Pinshi feels sorry that she didn’t prepare anything. “That’ ok. I have received your omiyage(生菓子) in hotel. I am here for meeting up friends, not for getting any benefit.” I comforted her.

Well, what I have brought for my friends from Taiwan? Firstly, I give each one a box of mask for preventing from H1N1. Secondly, the present is by customization: for Pinhsi, I give a vacuum packing of large intestine noodles(大腸麵線); for Shinya, a famous Taiwanese product which is most Japanese flavor, “pineapple cake(鳳梨酥).” I am glad that they are happy with my presents.

Hub again

We have only stayed 2 hours staying in Sora since it’s Friday night. Then, we shift to Hub (Note 2). It’s the only English pub Ian and I know in Tokyo. There’s a big screen on the wall in Hub, playing football game programme. Sometimes, when Ian and Shinya discuss athletics, football, triathlon those stuff, and point the game on screen, Pinhsi and I just listen. Sometimes, when we talk about Durham life, the only thing Ian can do is to listen. When talking about jobs, Pinhsi just sits in since she is still a student. Pinhsi has a useful function to help translate Chinese to Japanese. We don’t know how to pronounce some scenic spots we have visited. A trilingual ability definitely will get her in a good position in the future, I believe.

Hei, strangers

A new people come to sit on the opposite of the table. One of those guys tries to speak to us because he is just hearing the word “Taiwan.”. He has visited Chiayi(嘉義) for academic study at National Chung Cheng University(中正大學). They are college students, looking very young. For me, I am always glad to talk to the strangers only if the condition is in a safe range.

All good things come to the end

All good things come to the end. I really want to spend more time with my dear friends. It’s life, though. Take care, my good friends. It’s so nice to have you in my life. I am looking forward any opportunity to see you again. Love you and miss you!!!
